John Rhind Funeral Directors
John Rhind Funeral Directors began operating in Christchurch in 1881. The firm still operates on the site of the original premises in London Street, Christchurch.
In 1991 a complete new facility was opened on the site, including Chapel, catering lounge and office.
Seven members of the Rhind family continue to be involved in the firm, including John Rhind, grandson of the original John Rhind. There are fourteen full time funeral directors on the staff along with two on call casual funeral directors. Members of the Rhind family and many of the staff are very involved in community organisations and local churches throughout Christchurch and remain firmly focused on providing excellent service to Canterbury families.
Over the years the firm has sponsored many community events and projects. Recent examples have included the Firefighters Reserve in Kilmore Street and the restoration of the historic Bridle Path track which links Lyttleton and Christchurch via the Port Hills.
In 2002 the firms of G Barrell and Son and Blair-Kelly Funeral Services were absorbed into the John Rhind operation. All records of both firms have been retained and all pre-arranged and pre-paid funeral contracts are honoured as per the original agreement.
Staff members are available to give educational talks to interested groups and tours of the entire funeral home complex are able to be arranged.
Over the past three years we have held a Christmas candle lighting service for families we have helped over the preceding year. These services have become so popular that we now hold three in order to accommodate the numbers attending.
